The quake which happened 250km from the Afghan capital Kabul, had a depth of 213km. According to the US Geological Survey, the epicentre of the quake was near Jarm in Afghanistan’s northeast.
Al Jazeera reports that the total death toll in both countries stood at about 169 with at least 132 people killed in Pakistan and at least 37 more in Afghanistan.
The Prime Minister of Pakistan, Nawaz Sharif, has cut short his visit to the United Kingdom to fly home to deal with the emergency.
Meanwhile in Afghan province of Takhar, the collapse of a school building left 12 students dead and 40 others injured. Some of the victims, all girls aged 6 to 16, were killed in a stampede, according to official reports.
