Jamaicans will benefit from Rihanna’s college scholarship programme

Citizens of Barbados, Jamaica, Brazil, Cuba, Haiti, Guyana, and the United States who have been accepted to pursue studies in America will qualify for the scholarships, which will be available through the Umbrella singer’s Clara Lionel Foundation.

Pop superstar Rihanna, seemingly understands that a good education will never decay and that is why the Caribbean sensation launches this college scholarship programme.

The Clara Lionel Foundation is a nonprofit organisation launched in 2012 by Rihanna that “works to improve the quality of life for communities globally in the areas of health, education, arts, and culture.”

The awardees will be selected based on need and will receive between $5,000 and $50,000 towards their education, which is renewable up to the completion of their degrees.

Students will be judged on “academic performance, demonstrated leadership and participation in school and community activities, work experience and a personal essay”.

“To be able to give the gift of an education is actually an honor,” Rihanna said in a statement. “Higher education will help provide perspective, opportunities and learning to a group of kids who really deserve it. I am thrilled to be able to do this,” she continued.

Applications are now opened and will be accepted until June 10, 2016. Only 50 winners will be selected.

The winners will be announced in August.
