Curated by Jay, the 24-track playlist features songs from various eras that addressed the ongoing issues of social injustice. Artists like Curtis Mayfield (“Moving On Up”), Kendrick Lamar (“Alright”), Sam Cooke (“A Change Is Gonna Come”), Common (“Forever Begins”), Kanye West (“Ultralight Beam”), Outkast (“Vibrate”) are all included in the project. Jay’s wife, Beyoncé, also makes an appearance with her LEMONADE track “FREEDOM” featuring Kendrick Lamar.
In the wake of Alton Sterling and Philando Castile’s deaths, as well as the deaths of five police officers in Dallas this past week, both Jay and Beyoncé have used their platforms to speak out against these senseless killings. Only a couple of days after Jay released “Spiritual,” Beyoncé paid tribute to those who were killed at the Dallas Black Lives Matter protests during a performance in Glasgow. Other artists such as Miguel, Chris Brown, Swizz Beatz, and Ariana Grande have also used their music and voices to send their condolences as well as call for a change.
