Major Lazer shoots video in Jamaica Local acts, attractions featured

DJ/Producer Diplo of Major Lazer is the latest addition to the growing list of overseas-based entertainers… who have opted to utilise the creative space within Jamaica for capturing video footage, in keeping with the imagery they aim to portray in their music videos. The new Major Lazer video for their latest single, Get Free, takes viewers on quite a descriptive tour of aspects of Jamaican life. Galivanting schoolchildren, bikers, barbershops, hair salons and bars are all featured. The mountains, the waterfalls and surfing at the Wicki Wackie Beach in Bull Bay adds a touch of nature. The male dance groups at the street dances, the provocative moves by the females and those of puppet Skillesha, the jabs and punches of The Wray & Nephew Contender boxers and racehorsing, are all in the mix. Even the church is involved. top entertainers Cameos from some of dancehall’s top entertainers such as Konshens, Popcaan, Beenie Man and Navino are also present. The video, featuring Diplo and Amber from Dirty Projectors, was shot by SoMe and produced by Iconoclast. Over the years, many overseas acts have opted to come to Jamaica for shoots. Only last year, Bajan pop star Rihanna travelled to Portland, Jamaica, to film the music video for her single Man Down. It was not all rosy for the singer however, as she stirred up the anger of citizens and overseas organisations when the video was released containing a ‘rape scene’ with a man whom she later guns down. In 2010, Young Money rapper Drake also came under some amount of fire for his portrayal of Jamaica’s ‘gun culture’ in his video for Find Your Love from his Thank Me Later album. The video shot in sections of Kingston and St Andrew climaxes with Drake being presumably shot after falling in love with a woman who is romantically linked with the ghastly ‘don’, Mavado. That same year, Drake’s labelmate Nicki Minaj was also in Ocho Rios for the Letting Go (Dutty Love) video shoot with Jamaican-born pop sensation Sean Kingston.
