Jamaica-born reggae/pop singer Nyla (formerly of Brick & Lace) premiered her debut single Stand Up recently. This is Nyla’s first release under Konfrontation Muzik, the new record label founded by reggae star Ky-Mani Marley.
Stand Up is a double entendre-filled plea to a male partner to step up both inside of the bedroom and out. Produced by Miami’s CMC Productions, the track straddles the line between reggae, R&B, pop and dance music, offering listeners a taste of the unique hybrid sound of her upcoming debut EP.
“I’m drawing elements from different arenas of music, but it’s always going to be reggae influenced, because that’s my base,” Nyla says. “Whatever energy I bring, I’m always Jamaican.”
Born and raised in Kingston, Nyla (formerly known as Nailah) made up one half of Brick & Lace with her older sister, Nyanda. Together, the duo were the first act signed to Akon’s Kon Live label, scoring international hits with pop-reggae singles like Love Is Wicked, also the name of their 2007 debut album, and Never Never.
Nyla has also written for some of the biggest names in the music business, including Jennifer Lopez and Christina Aguilera, as part of the songwriting team Bloodline with Nyanda and her other sisters, Candace and Tasha.
“Nyla is one of the premier vocalists from Jamaica, and she’s ready to put her stamp on popular music,” says Ky-Mani Marley. “Her beauty is secondary to her soaring vocals. She’s really at the head of the pack when it comes to vocalists coming from yard.”
