ONE year since his former mentor Vybz Kartel’s imprisonment for the murder of Clive ‘Lizard’ Williams, deejay Popcaan is among dancehall’s prominent acts.
Popcaan (real name Andre Sutherland) released his first album Where We Come From on June 10, two months after Kartel’s 35-year sentence.
The 13-track album debuted at number two on Billboard’s Reggae Album chart and number 21 on that publication’s Heatseekers Album chart.
In an interview with the Jamaica Observer, Popcaan said Where we Come From showcased his growth as an artiste.
“I am hoping for the best with this album. I think I have definitely evolved musically over the past few years,” he said.
He did shows in Europe to promote the set. Everything is Nice, its first single, and the title track, were hits.
Popcaan came to national attention in 2010 when he teamed with Kartel on the number one song Clarks. His subsequent hits include Ravin, Unruly Rave, Only Man She Want (which entered the Billboard R&B Hip Hop songs chart), Party Shot and Dream.
